Manuscripts excluded from the database

In the process of assembling the Innovating Knowledge database, it turned out that some manuscripts listed in Las Etimologías en la tradición manuscrita medieval estudiada por el Prof. Dr. Anspach and in other sources used by the project team are mistakenly described as containing material from the Etymologiae or were misdated. A list of these ‘false friends’ form a natural complement of the database, for where there is something to include, there is often something to exclude as well.

At this moment, we record 53 ‘false friends’:

  • Liber glossarum (Anspach #8): cannot be considered a direct witness of the Etym.
  • St. Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek, MS 2 (Anspach #18): not really excerpts from Etym. XIV but a treatise loosely based on Etym. XIII 21 + XIV 8 + XI 3.17-27 (also in St. Gallen 213 and Lyon 788)
  • St. Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek, MS 213 (Anspach #21): not really excerpts from Etym. XIV but a treatise loosely based on Etym. XIII 21 + XIV 8 + XI 3.17-27 (also in St. Gallen 2 and Lyon 788)
  • Wolfenbüttel, Herzog August Bibliothek, Weiss. 86 (Anspach #24a): glosses: does not fit database criteria
  • Prague, Národní knihovna České republiky, XXIII.E.54 (Anspach #27): contains Boniface’s Ars metrica (147r-147v + 204r-205r), not Etym. I 17 and 39
  • Vatican, BAV, Vat. Lat. 3320 (Anspach #28a): a glossary with some lemmata from Etym.: does not fit database criteria
  • Basel, Universitätsbibliothek, F III 15a (Anspach #30): contains a different text, not Etym. VI 16
  • Basel, Universitätsbibliothek, F III 15d (Anspach #30a): De vitiis attributed to Isidorus Iunior, not an excerpt from book I
  • Vatican, BAV, Vat. Lat. 1471 (Anspach #44): glosses: does not fit database criteria
  • Brussels, Bibliotheque municipale (Anspach #48): no manuscript already not included in the database corresponds to Anspach’s description
  • Vienna, ONB, MS 121 (Anspach #79): contains Hrabanus Maurus, De universo, not Etym.
  • Bamberg, Staatsbibliothek, Msc.Class. 55 (Anspach #84a): contains a different text, not Etym. XVI 26 (albeit Isidore named)
  • Bern, Burgerbibliothek, MS A 91.18 (Anspach #87): a glossary containing some Isidorian material: does not fit database criteria
  • Bern, Burgerbibliothek, MS 336 (Anspach #91): only one sentence from Isidore (Etym. II 24.3): does not fit criteria (albeit Isidore named)
  • Berlin, Staatsbibliothek, Phillipps 1686 (Anspach #94): contains Isidore’s Chronicon, not Etym. V 29-39 (or V 39)
  • Montecassino, Archivio dell’Abbazia, MS 322 (Anspach #107a): Arnobius’s Praedestinatus, not Etym. VIII 4-5
  • Cologne, Dombibliothek, MS 115 (Anspach #110a): does not contain Etym. IX 6.1-28 as indicated by Anspach, but only a sentence mentioning Isidore’s Etymologiae (In aethimologiarum sancti Ysidori libro septimo capitulo XXX primo de agnatis et cognatis)
  • Cologne, Dombibliothek, MS 211 (Anspach #112): a glossary that contains Isidorian material: does not fit criteria

  • Paris, BnF, n.a.l. 763 (fols. 4-42) (Anspach #157): glosses to the Rule of Benedict that contain some Isidorian definitions: does not fit database criteria
  • St. Paul in Carinthia, Stiftsbibliothek, MS 5/1 (Anspach #159): cannot be considered a direct witness of the Etym.
  • Vatican, BAV, Reg. Lat. 310 (Anspach #161): glosses: does not fit database criteria
  • Vatican, BAV, Pal. Lat. 1448 (fols. 1-60) (Anspach #164): a computistic treatise which refers to Isidore and has a few definitions from Etym., not excerpts from Etym. V
  • Vatican, BAV, Reg. Lat. 1260 (fols. 87-124) (Anspach #167): the computistic treatise on fols. 87-124 is not from Etym.
  • Valenciennes, Bibliotheque municipale, MS 393 (Anspach #175): the passages from Etym. I are actually parts of Donatus Ortigraphus
  • Vienna, ÖNB, MS 89 (Anspach #177): contains Isidore’s Chronicon, not Etym. V 39
  • Würzburg, Universitätsbibliothek, M.p.th.f. 14 (Anspach #179): not from Etym.
  • Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, H 187 inf. (Anspach #200): should be dated to the 12th c.
  • Lisbon, Biblioteca Municipal, Alcobaca 17 (Anspach #222): the only Alcobaca ms. containing the entire Etym. is Alcobaca 446 from the 13th c., in.

  • St. Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek, MS 899 (Bernhard, Huglo): contains a paraphrase of Etym. III 19
  • Vienna, ÖNB, MS 1609 (Bernhard, Huglo): contains a paraphrase of Etym. III 19
